Balaclava Rugby

Wednesday

Mark finished up his stretch of three evening shifts today; two of his patients had positive flu tests, but hopefully we won't catch it. Meanwhile, Sherry and Karla headed to rugby training after school with the kids. Despite their best intentions of going to the rugby field after school to have snacks and let the boys and Tori blow off steam on the playground before training, the weather soon turned on them. While the sun stayed shining, ice cold breezes started blowing in off the ocean, and though all the kids seemed fine running around in their wool hats and sweatshirts, Karla and Sherry were freezing. Turns out a strong southwesterly blew over the North Island today, dropping temperatures to their lowest this winter. Keep in mind that there's nothing southwest of New Zealand until you reach Antarctica.

School ends at 3 pm, and rugby practice starts at 4:30, so by the time all of their team arrived, Ro and MJ were starting to succumb to the biting wind. They spent the majority of the first half wrapping up their exposed legs with their sweatshirts and huddling on the sidelines. Of course, the urge to run around with their mates eventually got the better of them, so they took off running around the field with their hats pulled down over their faces. Though they had no tries, they did score for improving team morale, because we were ALL freezing. Even the coach had to laugh, though he did convince them to put their hats on properly, and they ended training more respectably running laps with their team.
