Any Excuse For A Party

Thursday

We heard a few fireworks going off late last night, and wondered why. We soon figured it out this morning - it's Guy Fawkes Day today! Even though the story surrounding Guy Fawkes had nothing to do with New Zealand, it's still a popular holiday here, as it's the only time of the year Kiwis can legally buy fireworks.

Mark had to work today, and Carver busied himself with his car project and exploring the local hardware stores - he's already pulled the dent in the bumper out with a suction cup. Sherry, Norma, and Cerine decided to walk up Mauao. Sherry let Norma go in front and set the pace. Even so, both Cerine and Norma had to stop frequently, as it's a lot steeper than anything they're used to back home, and the hot, sunny weather didn't make it any easier. They were quite grateful for the rainstorm that rolled in as they reached the top!

We made it!

Thoroughly soaked by the time they got home, the ladies dried off and started making Minestrone soup for dinner. Carver was still feeling a bit under the weather, and didn't come over until after Mark got home from work. Craig was nice enough to bring over his bucket of tools for Carver to use; he handed them to Sherry with a wink and a nudge, "Here ya go, Crash."

The soup was delicious, and it was a perfect day for it since it had turned cool and wet. Ro played with Barnaby after dinner, then Sherry put him to bed as the rest of us took an evening constitutional around town. After Mark got home from the walk, he and Sherry caught Valkyrie on Sky TV and watched the fireworks intermittently popping above the rooftops long into the evening.

Who knew Chia made cars?
