The Hills In Kiwi Country

Thursday

Our schizophrenic weather was gorgeous again today, so we rode over to Te Puke to show the family Kiwi360. You wouldn't think a 45 minute agriculture lecture would be very interesting, but it was. Mark and Sherry were actually glad to hear it a second time, since Ro was a little distracting the first time around. Last time we were there it was packing season, but the packing house was closed now so instead we got a little tour of the old-time kiwi fruit sorting machines, which were quite ingenious.

After our tour, we walked around the beautifully landscaped grounds, sliding on the playground slides, and getting lost in the dragon maze. We also hit the gift shop, where Mark's family tried golden kiwis for the first time, and we all tasted plenty of samples of kiwi jam, kiwi relish, kiwi wine, kiwi brandy, etc... We picked up a few souvenirs, including some "spifes" (like a spork, a utensil specially designed for slicing a kiwi and scooping the fruit out of the skin).

Springtime!

How the heck do I get out of here?

Back at The Anchorage, we cooked up brunch at N&C's place. The ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches were very good, if a bit runny. Norma is obviously not used to making fried egg sandwiches, and didn't break the yolks. We relaxed with tea and TimTams, then it was time for Mark to leave for work and Sherry to pick Ro up from school.

After Ro was home, everyone (except Mark) went down to Pilot Bay to enjoy the gentle waves and sheltered beach. Of course, nearly every time we go there we get ice cream, and today was no exception. When Ro finished his ice cream, he tossed the remainder of the cone, eliciting a comical struggle amongst the seagulls for the tasty treat.
